Gears of War: E-Day is the sixth main installment of the Gears of War series, and also its prequel. The game was created by The Coalition studio, formerly known as Black Tusk Studios, which took over the series from Epic Games in 2014. The Polish team People Can Fly, who developed Gears of War: Judgment from 2013 and the PC conversion of the first installment of the series, helped with this project.

Story

The action of Gears of War: E-Day begins 14 years before the events depicted in the first installment of the series. The subtitle of the game refers to the so-called Emergence Day, the moment when hordes of creatures known as the Locust Horde, previously living underground, crawled to the surface of the planet Sera, bringing its human inhabitants to the brink of extinction.

GamingBolt: 9 / 10 by Shubhankar Parijat

It stumbles sometimes with its story, but thanks to new and improved movement mechanics, Gears of War: E-Day ends up delivering some of the tightest combat and one of the series' most excellently paced campaigns in a long, long time.

TechRaptor: 9.5 / 10 by Austin Suther

Gears of War: E-Day is the best game in the series. The story gives us an up-close and personal look at the events of E-Day, providing a horror-filled and harrowing experience. Meanwhile, the enhancements to movement are very welcome, and gunplay feels more varied with a great roster of weapons and the inclusion of mods.

Xbox Tavern: 9.5 / 10 by Jamie Collyer

All in all, Gears of War: EDay is the best thing Gears since Gears of War 2, and we say that having very much enjoyed the majority of the franchise. The Coalition have done a superb job making the Locust feel fresh – and frightening – all over again, the combat is easily the best in the series, and despite knowing how the general gist turns out for Marcus and Dom, they’ve crafted a genuinely completing story to follow along with. Excellent stuff all round, and if this is the marker of a new beginning for XBOX’s first party titles – exclusive or otherwise – then we’re in for once hell of a renaissance.
