An off-road driving game from Funselektor Labs - authors of art of rally and Absolute Drift. over the hill takes us to the "golden area of off-road", allowing us to drive iconic vehicles from 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. We can explore maps (alone or in online coop), discover secrets and complete challenges.
over the hill is the effect of the second collaboration (previous one was Golden Lap) between independent studios Funselektor Labs from Canada and Strelka Games from Italy - with the former being the main contributor. Funselektor previously gained fame for creating the games art of rally and (to a lesser extent) Absolute Drift. This time, the developers tackled the theme of off-road driving.
over the hill is set in the "golden age of off-roading - the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. It recreates iconic off-road vehicles from that time, such as Ford Bronco, Land Rover or Toyota Land Cruiser (in unlicensed versions).
We can drive these models on open maps in diverse biomes, from grassy valleys to snow-covered mountain slopes (we move between them by discovering portals). Although the creators emphasize relaxing by driving and exploring, as well as enjoying the views, we must be careful with the difficult terrain. The ground is subject to dynamic deformation, as well as to changing weather conditions. The day and night cycle is also present in the game.
over the hill sets various goals for us to accomplish, and the rewards for this are new vehicles, upgrades, and parts for customizing the appearance of machines. There are also scattered collectibles on the maps.
A significant attraction in the game is the online cooperation, which allows us to ride together with friends and help each other (even by using a winch). However, there is nothing to prevent us from playing over the hill alone.
Although the game has a minimalist visual design (similar in style to that of art of rally), it is capable of generating picturesque views. We can capture the scenery using the photo mode built into over the hill.

If you’re looking for a blend of cosy gaming and road trips with a pleasant driving model, you’re sure to find just that in over the hill. It’s also the perfect game for podcasts playing in the background. It really shines in online co-op mode; it’s only when driving in convoys with friends, helping one another just like in the iconic Camel Trophy rallies, that it unleashes its full potential – in single-player mode, the motivation to explore further is somewhat lacking.

Over the Hill can offer both a relaxing, casual experience and some real challenges on the road. But no matter the case, it is all about the journey, as it should be for a 4×4 game. It offers a variety of resources and mechanics for all kinds of players, along with incredible scenery. The game was definitely built to let players enjoy the places and the driving rather than be an ability test. The roads are unique and fun to drive; the world is nice to explore, and you can still see some wild animals as you travel. Of course, most roads are optional, as you can always choose to cut through the woods in a straight line toward your next goal, but the game allows you to do as you wish. Over the Hill lets players roam freely in a way few car games can provide, and it does so in an interesting way.

The Runner series is amongst my favourite driving games of all time, and over the hill is a unique take in the same spirit as those games. Its cosy, calming outlook and laidback vibes could have felt out of place, but this is an adventure game, in the truest sense of the word.
